The Wish Children

Born five weeks premature and weighing just five pounds, Alina quickly grew to become a strong and healthy little girl. All of that changed when in 2010, Alina was diagnosed with low grade, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). At just three years old, Alina has experienced more pokes, tests and hospital visits than any toddler should have to deal with. Alina is undergoing daily chemotherapy treatment and weekly bone marrow treatments. She will remain in treatment for a minimum of three years to ensure her continued well being.

By all accounts, Alina is described as a cheerful and outgoing little girl. She loves art and her masterpieces can be found on display at home and by family and friends. She is also a huge animal lover. Although she is undecided on her most heartfelt wish, and who can blame her when there are just so many possibilities, it will no doubt be the experience of a lifetime!

Thanks to MMR for making Alina's Wish come true!

In May 2010, Andrew’s life was forever changed. The active thirteen year old was diagnosed with osteosarcoma; the most common type of bone cancer. Since being diagnosed, Andrew has had surgery to remove a malignant tumour from his pelvis and has undergone several rounds of aggressive chemotherapy treatment.

Despite these challenges, Andrew remains a positive and caring individual who is always thinking of others. Andrew was recently a finalist for the most prestigious student award at his school. His teacher Ms. Duggleby shares: “Andrew’s warm smile lights up my day and his polite, respectful sense of humour is welcomed by everyone. I am so lucky to see him enhance the grade eight class this year. Words cannot express the positive difference he has made in the lives of every student in my class with his sincere, kind and gently spoken words. His compassion for his fellow students is obvious to all those he meets.”

Although not confirmed, Andrew is considering a Caribbean Cruise for his wish. This would be the chance for him, his parents and younger brother Thomas to enjoy a care free week together in the sand and sun!

Thanks to Integral Energy for making Andrew's Wish come true!

Tia

Tia was twelve years old when she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and severe Lupus. Despite several years of intense and invasive treatment, Tia is today an active and outgoing fourteen year old. She is known for her wonderful sense of humour and outgoing personality, not to mention the dishes she creates in the kitchen.

Not one to let her diagnosis interfere with her athletics or academics, Tia has been playing softball for the past four years and is an exceptional student who hopes to one day become a lawyer.

Tia's most heartfelt Wish is to go to Paris!

Thanks to the Tia's Dream Weavers, for making Tia's Wish come true!

Four year old Karlee was just three years old when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in August of 2010. She went into remission within her first week of treatment, which is common, but still has to complete a full 2.5 years of treatment to ensure her leukemia is gone.

Karlee is a very active little girl who loves to dance and play Tim Bits soccer. She also likes playing with her big brother Ryley and watching any movies that have to do with Barbie, My Little Pony, or Strawberry Shortcake. Her favourite colours are pink and yellow and she has two pets – a cat named Stacey and a dog named Makoba.

Karlee’s most heartfelt Wish is to take a Disney Cruise!

Thanks to the Calgary Herald for making Karlee's Wish come true!

Ever since birth, Anastacia has loved music and dance. When she was a baby, she used to ‘crawl dance’ as her mother calls it, and rock back and forth to the music. She has a drum set, a keyboard, and two guitars that she plays regularly. Recently when she was very nauseous from her chemotherapy, she asked for a bucket in case she had to throw up. She looked at it on her lap for a second, turned it over, and started drumming on it. Even her 2010 diagnosis with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia hasn’t stopped her from doing the things she loves. Anastacia is currently undergoing treatment but remains an incredibly upbeat and happy little girl.

Like most little kids, she loves following around her older siblings. She follows her twin 15 year old brothers around faithfully. While she follows them, Anastacia has a tea cup yorkie puppy that follows her! When she feels well, Anastacia goes to dance and gymnastics classes and when she isn’t able to leave the hospital she makes the most of any situation.

In addition to loving music and dance, Anastacia also loves anything to do with princesses. Although she hasn’t officially decided, Anastacia’s wish is likely to involve princesses and dressing up. According to her Mom, Anastacia loves to dress up because fancy clothes and shoes make her feel exquisite!

Despite having been treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia for 1/3 of his life, at 6’4” and is over 200lbs, seventeen year old Christopher doesn’t look like a “sick kid”. An avid football and rugby player, he wants to one day try his hand at hockey, and has been snowmobiling in Quebec in the middle of winter.

Christopher is close to his family, including his big sister Liz. He also has an artistic side and enjoys strumming a guitar and building lego masterpieces.

Christopher's most heartfelt Wish is to go to Disney World!

Thank you to WEMSLOH (World Energy Management Systems) for making Chris' Wish come true!

Three year old Gabrielle was only 6 months old when she diagnosed with Bilateral Retino Blastoma.( eye cancer). Gabrielle and her mom flew to Toronto that same night to have a nucleation (removal of the left eye), as the tumour in that eye was so big that she had lost all her vision. Her good eye had 6 tumours to be treated with laser and Cryo, requiring travel to Toronto every 6 weeks for the next year. She was very fortunate in that she did not need to undergo chemotherapy.

Gabrielle loves shopping and her favourite stores include the Gap, H&M, and the Disney Store. She loves to wear pink and orange – but don’t even try to make her wear anything black!

Gabrielle has a 6 and 8 year old sister that she loves to play babies, ride her bike, dance, and jump on the trampoline with. When Gabrielle grows up she wants to cook for everyone and mow the lawn.

Gabrielle’s most heartfelt Wish is to go to Atlantis, Nassau, Bahamas, so she can swim at the beach, see exotic animals and sea life, and take boat rides!

Thanks to the Investor's Group South, Team Temana, for making Gabrielle's Wish come true!

Five year old Leland was only three when his family rushed him to emergency with a nosebleed that wouldn’t stop. That very same day he received an emergency blood transfusion; 76% of his blood cells were cancerous – he was one week away from death. Leland was subsequently diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and received 7 months of intensive, high risk cancer treatment.

Though still in treatment, Leland is a bundle of energy who loves playing sports in his basement, hitting Home Depot with his dad, teasing his nurses, and watching his big brother, Laeden, play Lacrosse. His favourite foods include chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, steak and pizza, which he especially loves eating while watching his favourite TV shows – Wizards of Waverly Place and Suite Life On Deck. He has a dog named Cruize and while he cheers on all the Calgary Flames, his favourite player is Rene Borque. In his spare time, Leland likes to watch You Tube videos, playing Wii, and visiting his favourite restaurant, Chucky Cheese! When I grow up I want to be a hockey player.

Leland’s most heartfelt Wish is to go to Disneyland so he can meet Mickey Mouse, Pluto and Handy Manny at the Mickey Mouse Club House!

Thanks to the Kiewit Konquerers for making Leland's Wish come true!

Levi was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) when he was just one and a half years year old.  Over the next three years he underwent chemo therapy treatments, finishing in September 2010.

Levi is now a very outgoing five year old who will be starting kindergarten in the fall.  He loves meeting new people, dancing to Hip Hop music, and going out for dinner.

Now that his immune system is getting back to normal, the family, which includes his new puppy Blu, has embarked on a “playground tour” of different playgrounds around Calgary.  Levi is having a blast and enjoys going up to any of the kids that might be playing at the playground and says "Hi, my name is Levi and I am five years old!” Levi also likes to ride his bike, play transformers and loves all robots, including Asimo, R2D2, and Wall-e.

Levi is an extraordinary person.  His parents marvel at his strength and believe that he has carried them through the rough times. He is loving and sensitive and doesn't like to see anyone getting hurt, even if it's on TV- he will turn it off.

Levi's most heartfelt Wish is to meet Asimo, the humanoid robot created by Honda!

Michael was 3 ½ years old when he started complaining about periodic eye pain. As the pain increased, he became lethargic and soon after, Michael lost vision in his right eye. After extensive testing, Michael was diagnosed with stage 4 Burkett’s Lymphoma. There was a golf ball sized tumour compressing his optic nerve causing permanent blindness in his right eye. With each type of diagnostic imaging, other tumours were found – in his kidneys, pancreas and abdomen.

Michael began a very aggressive treatment that required 24 hour chemo infusions for several days each month for several months. Between treatments, Michael would become so ill that he would be hospitalized until he was healthy enough to go home.

Last year, during his annual cancer follow-up appointment, at age 14 it was discovered that Michael had a pheochromocytoma – a hormone producing tumour on his adrenal gland which is extremely rare in children/youths. In May 2010, he underwent a very delicate surgery to remove the adrenal gland (an adrenalectomy). What was suppose to be a 1-2 day stay in the regular recovery unit ended up being a 5 day stay in intensive care and two additional days on the post surgical unit at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. He has since recovered and is checked routinely at the ACH.

Despite all of this, Michael remains an optimistic and positive young man. He likes to joke that, because each of his occurrences of cancer are very rare on there own and it's extremely rare for a person to have both diseases in his lifetime – in fact there is no recorded case of a child or adult having both of these diseases – he stood a better chance of being hit by lightening multiple times in a 15 minute period than contracting both diseases. He also stood a better chance of repeat lottery winnings.

Michael’s most heartfelt wish will include travelling – but the destination changes daily!

Thanks to Northern Patriot for making Michael's Wish come true!
